Monstera Deliciosa

Monstera deliciosa · Araceae

Easy Keep from pets 18–27°C
Care at a glance
LightBright indirect. Tolerates medium light but makes fewer splits in it; direct midday sun scorches the leaves.
WaterWater when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry — roughly weekly in summer, less in winter. It would rather be slightly dry than sitting wet.
HumidityHappy at normal room humidity; above 60% encourages larger leaves.
SoilChunky, free-draining mix — potting soil with orchid bark and perlite.
Temperature18–27°C
PetsToxic to cats and dogs if chewed (calcium oxalate).

Give it something to climb. A moss pole meaningfully increases leaf size, because the plant reads vertical support as permission to mature.

Common problems

What usually goes wrong

Yellowing lower leaves

What you see: Older leaves go uniformly yellow and soft
What it usually means: Usually overwatering. Let the mix dry further between waterings and check the pot drains.

No fenestrations

What you see: New leaves come in solid, without holes
What it usually means: Almost always not enough light. Move it closer to a bright window; young plants also leaf solid before maturing.

Brown crispy edges

What you see: Edges dry and brown while the plant is otherwise fine
What it usually means: Dry air or inconsistent watering. Group plants together or water more evenly.
